Smile Politely Features Amasong

The pandemic has profoundly influenced how choirs operate this year. Amasong is still singing, just differently.

“Amasong has always been on the cutting edge of choral music since its inception in 1990. Its incorporation of a progressive angle into its song choices and performances was representative of a shift for its creator, Kristina Boerger, from more mainstream political activism to a form of artistic intervention. Amasong was, and is still today, widely known for its active inclusion of feminist and lesbian-identified individuals. And it is always open to new involvement; in fact, you can reach out to director Heidi Weatherford for more details if you so choose.

Despite the influx of barriers to success for choral groups in the midst of COVID-19, newly initiated director Heidi Weatherford asserts that Amasong remains a safe haven for its members and a steady voice for social justice in Champaign-Urbana. I spoke with Weatherford, as well as predecessor Jill Crandall, about their recent shift in leadership; how the chorus has dealt with challenges presented by COVID-19; and the nature of Amasong’s unique impact on the Champaign-Urbana community.”

Amasong needs your support during this Covid19 Pandemic

Running a chorus in Illinois these days is expensive. In the past we’ve received funding from the Illinois Arts Council and generous patrons. Amasong is committed to paying artists as professionals, including our artistic director, pianist, and the  guest artists who perform at our concerts.  Other expenses include rental of office, rehearsal and performance space, purchase of music, insurance, annual community building retreats, and commissions of works by female composers.

Many of the venues at which we recruit singers are canceled this year due to the pandemic. This makes us sad but we are not giving up, just taking a break until it is safe to sing again.

Amasong is devoted to all women-identified singers being able to participate, regardless of their ability to pay. Your support can help keep the chorus thriving. Amasong is a 501c3 and all donations are tax deductible.

Each Amasinger pays per-semester dues and a music fee.  The twice-yearly concerts generate revenue, as do extra concerts in our communities.  The sale of CDs t-shirts, and other items help with expenses and get the Amasong name out to new and potential fans, but do not provide a significant revenue stream.

Does that cover it? In ordinary times Amasong depends on donations from faithful donors. In this time of pandemic we are not able to sing together or have concerts for a while. We will be back when it is safe to do so.

If every person who has heard Amsong’s music on a CD or watched the “Amasong Chorus: Singing Out” documentary gave just a little bit, we would not have to lean on the faithful few.  We are constantly expanding the list of those who should have the opportunity to support Amasong’s efforts.

How can I help?

Your gift of $15-25 would cover the music fees for one singer

Your gift of $125 would cover one semester of dues for a singer

Your gift of $150 would help defray the salary of one guest artist

Your gift of $50 would defray the rent of rehearsal space

A recurring gift of just $10 / month would make a tangible difference in the life of the chorus.
